The Meaning of Money - Feat. Jeremy Allaire

Written by Team Circle | March 26, 2015

Tonight at 9pm EDT, Christopher Lydon, host of WBUR’s Radio Open Source, will sit down with Michael Lewis, author of Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt, Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire, and Brown University political scientist/economist Alex Gourevitch to discuss the existing financial system and how bitcoin might resuscitate transparency in the industry.

One year ago, Michael Lewis blew up the debate about the dangers of high-frequency trading when he published Flash Boys; today, Lewis argues that since the book’s publication and subsequent uproar, there “hasn’t been real structural change” to the system, in which average investors are at a disadvantage compared to high-frequency traders. On Radio Open Source, Michael will provide insight into the state of the global financial system.

The segment will transition into a discussion with Jeremy and Dr. Gourevitch, author of From Slavery to the Cooperative Commonwealth, about deeper ideas of money and the potential to reform the financial system in a grassroots fashion using the Internet. They’ll explore how bitcoin – and in particular blockchain technology – has the potential to bring change to the global monetary system.

If you’re in the Boston area, tune in to WBUR 90.9 live tonight at 9pm EDT. The show will also be live-streamed at wbur.org and shortly after available as an iTunes podcast via Radio Open Source.
