Platform launch fosters new era of digital currency native payments and treasury infrastructure for internet businesses; introduces new transparent, subscription-based pricing
Earlier this year, Circle announced the initial launch of a new suite of services aimed at fostering growth in payments, commerce and financial applications built around digital dollar stablecoins. Over the course of 2020, we have continued to roll out major new components of this suite, culminating in a major upgrade with new simple and transparent pricing, enabling any sized internet business to begin to harness the power of digital dollars as a payments and treasury infrastructure.
Since Q2 of 2020, Circle has brought hundreds of companies onto its new digital currency platform, spanning an incredibly broad array of industries and use-cases, and helping these firms connect the existing financial system with stablecoins and blockchain rails. Customers span industries including banking and finance, transportation, government treasury and aid, real estate, gaming and online content, advertising, crypto and internet services, as well as varied financial application use-cases spanning consumer payments, B2B payments, cross-border and international payment settlement, savings and lending, trade finance, investment management and brokerage, and digital securities. These customers are highly global, spanning over 34 countries, with nearly 70% from outside the United States.
Alongside this growth in customer activity, Circle-issued stablecoin USDC has experienced explosive growth, increasing from around 400 million USDC in circulation since January to more than 3 billion today, and supporting over $200B in on-chain payment volume. Fueled by global macro trends, digital dollarization, digital asset markets, the rise in decentralized finance (DeFi) and rapidly expanding use cases, USDC has quickly become the world’s leading dollar stablecoin.
At the core of Circle’s latest platform upgrade is a new digital currency native treasury account infrastructure, Digital Dollar Accounts, which empowers businesses of all sizes to store value natively in digital currency while maintaining compatibility with legacy electronic money and payment networks. The solution scales from the needs of a small business seeking to benefit from instant, low-cost global payments and exposure to high-yield digital dollar accounts*, to large commerce firms, fintechs and banks using this embedded treasury infrastructure to support end-user products and automate complex funds flows.
Circle’s new digital dollar accounts infrastructure supports multiple currencies and blockchains, enabling digital dollar transactions globally on public blockchains that can scale to thousands of transactions per second, with near-instant settlement and transaction costs as little as a fraction of a cent, an enormous leap forward compared to legacy banking infrastructure. While much of the fintech industry is focused on simplified “banking as a service” or “embedded finance” built on legacy banking infrastructure,
We’ve also revamped our Circle Account Dashboard, providing a seamless UX for multichain USDC transfers, and integrated reporting and analytics on payment flows and account usage. This expanded Dashboard will become available early next year.
Businesses building on their Circle Account can leverage an expanded suite of API products to automate and support their own first-party payments and payouts as well as customer, partner and supplier payments and payouts, seamlessly moving between legacy rails and new blockchain-native digital currency transactions.
Payments and Payouts are supported across credit card and debit card networks, international bank wires and domestic bank transfers, as well as USDC transactions across multiple public blockchains including Ethereum, Algorand, Stellar and Solana, with more to come. Payment services include bundled Fraud and Risk management tools, helping customers fight fraud and identify bad actors.
Combined with Circle APIs for Digital Dollar Accounts and Marketplaces, even the most complex commerce firms and use-cases can leverage Circle to support global marketplaces with diverse buyers, sellers, suppliers and payment flows.
Following on this major upgrade, customers will soon be able to take advantage of new integrated features including:
Streamlined, automated payouts to Visa’s network of crypto-enabled digital wallets, enabling customers to receive funds over USDC and spend those funds instantly at 60M+ Visa merchant locations.
A forthcoming Circle-branded Visa Corporate Card, allowing your business end-users to spend digital dollars at Visa merchants globally.
With today’s launch, business customers can get started by opening a free Circle Account, enabling bank transfers, USDC conversions, and on-chain payment flows across multiple blockchains.
For usage of Circle API products, global businesses now have access to scalable pricing plans that are built with complete transparency and no hidden fees. Plans start as low as a couple hundred dollars per month and include dozens of embedded features for accepting and making payments, fighting fraud, managing a scalable digital dollar ledger, routing funds through multiple blockchains and so much more. Whether you are a small crypto startup, or a large financial institution, we support the cost structure needed to scale with you.
Circle’s new platform launch comes at a pivotal time for the crypto industry, and the role of dollar stablecoins in particular. Dramatic growth has brought major commercial players to this innovative new infrastructure for the financial system. Preeminent stablecoin standards and governance arrangements such as Centre and Diem are set to usher in much larger scale adoption of dollar stablecoins, while global and domestic policy maker and regulatory engagement around open internet finance is rapidly increasing.
Here at Circle, we are certainly focused on those big picture themes and initiatives, always seeking to collaborate with industry leaders and government to move forward the dream of a more open, global and inclusive financial system. Meanwhile, we are mostly just hard at work trying to improve things for customers solving real problems with this breakthrough technology; feature by feature, and block by block.
At the heart of this effort is a relentless focus on the developers who are building this new crypto-enabled digital economy — blockchain platform devs, DeFi protocol devs, and, of course, the developers directly adopting Circle APIs to create solutions for their businesses.
With our latest upgrade, we’ve also revamped and expanded our Developer Guides at developers.circle.com, where any developer can sign-up now and get started in our sandbox. It’s always an open invitation to come join us in building this new global financial system.
